Let’s face it, the saying is true…”the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” But can you really take the relationship seriously when the way to earn a place in his future is based on your ability to chop and bake? It should be noticed, that not only one person has to fill the chef’s shoes, everyone should know at least the basics for preparing breakfast in bed. If you are like many people growing up now, who have their parents cook everything for them and still have their lunches made by their mothers, then if you actually go out of your way to learn a thing or two in the kitchen it will show how much you are willing to make an effort.

It is understandable that with the increasing popularity of fast food chains and frozen dinners there are less people willing to learn how to cook, but has it really come to the point where it is a rarity? Personally, I can count all the men who I know that have a basic knowledge of the kitchen. By those few, I am impressed. This is not to say that I have any extensive knowledge concerning cooking, but I know enough to make someone not feel sick, and maybe say “mmm.” Since, the ability to cook is becoming such a rarity, does it change the way to a man’s heart, or would something being warmed up cut it in the modern relationship?

I am not sure if I am taking feminism back a few years by saying that I enjoy cooking for the person I care for. It is interpreted with a traditionalist ear, instead of through the realization that a person can be content having someone else enjoy something they created. I went to university, I intend to work for a living (though winning the lottery is my back up plan), and I believe that in some regards, especially those concerning the kitchen, feminism restricts who can enjoy cooking. This being said, although the saying “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” does not state anything about women, a man who knows how to cook definitely gets brownie points. Pun totally intended.
