It's that time of year again! The time when all the ghosts, goblins and skanky girls come out of hiding. I don't know about the rest of you, but regardless of my age, I still get excited for Halloween... though not in the same way I used to.
Think about how your perception of Halloween changed over the years. You begin with this this feeling of excitement because everyone around you is excited. All of your elementary school projects are Halloween themed and you already have your costume planned out weeks (if not months) ahead of time. Of course, if your parents are going out with you in Canada, it means that you are wearing a giant jacket or snow pants on top of that amazing costume.
Over the next couple years school remains the same with its Halloween oriented projects and assignments, but brings in a new element: Halloween school dances. All of your friends get so excited, you finally make your way into the large gym where the boys and girls stand awkwardly at opposite sides for the majority of the party. There will inevitably be one girl who is crying because of one boy, which allows the other girls to either go comfort her or travel to the boys side to gossip about the problem.
You reach high school and as Halloween begins to roll around, you start to hear about Halloween parties. At this stage in life there is usually a person you have this huge crush on at the same party and something will usually go wrong, especially if these are the beginnings of your drinking days. Someone will end up throwing up, the bathrooms will have run out of toilet paper and there will always be skanky costumes.
I believe the stage I am in is my favourite to date. People try to find costumes that are creative and fun, instead of just whatever they could scramble together last minute. You know the ones I am talking about... wet paint on a box doesn't make a robot. Sure, there is still a party and plenty of drunkeness, but it feels much more comfortable than the previous years of mischief.
Oh and all those asshole late teens and people in their 20s that STILL go around getting candy way past a reasonable hour and break the pumpkins people leave out... I hope you trip on something in the dark.
