Occupy

October 19th, 2011

The Occupy protest started on Wall Street and has been slowly trickling its way around the world. The main goal of these protests is to send the message that the richest 1% should not hold the majority of power over a government in which we should be seen as equals. Whether it be through increased food prices, losing your job, or tax hikes, the recession affected us all, even though we were not the direct cause of the debt which a government accumulated.

The Occupy movement was created based on social movements in Egypt, who protested high unemployment, corruption, police brutality, low wages and many other injustices. This protest, though originally intended to be non-violent, ended with thousands being injured and approximately 850 civilian deaths. Thankfully the Occupy movement in United States, as well as in many other countries, has been peaceful and still received a tremendous amount of media attention.

Although in Toronto (where we're from) the protests aren't as large, there are still a number of people here who fully support the goals and messages behind the Occupy protestors in New York and around the world.
